There’s something for everyone at the Expo – including the kids! We invite your kids to join in at the children’s arts corner. This year’s Expo has a butterfly theme and will feature arts and crafts projects that kids can ‘make and take’ out of all recycled materials. These will include colorful butterfly magnets out of coffee filters, clothespins with magnets glued on the back and pipe cleaners. They are going to use their imagination to paint or color and end up with beautiful butterflies that they can use as magnets.
The highlight of our ‘community’ art project this year will be a giant Monarch Butterfly (or 2) that will be shared by the various Green Teams hosting the Living Local Expo. Again, using only recycled materials, old wire, a picture frame, bottle caps, odds n’ends from the basement and leftover craft supplies, participants will create collages that are put together with leftover wire and pipe cleaners. We encourage all to come join the fun.
The arts play an important role for the individual as well as for the community. They “foster beauty, creativity, originality and vitality. They inspire, sooth, provoke and engage individuals and build social cohesion by bringing diverse people together for shared cultural experiences.”* The arts are being recognized as key components to a sustainable future; “they are a powerful dynamic and economic force that supports key businesses and the tourism industry; the arts are essential to a quality education and help our children succeed as innovators and problem solvers.”**
And they are a lot of fun!
